History
The cooper tire company is 100 years old and started by making rubber for tire repair. Cooper Tire created its first tires in 1920. The war of 1942 caused the company to change its production to wartime production. These efforts earned the company the “E” award for excellence. In 1946, it changed its name to Cooper Tire & Rubber Company and became a publicly Held Corporation and became publically traded in the 1960s and joined the ranks of the Fortune 500 in 1983. In the 21st century, the company focused on global expansion. In 1997, Cooper purchased Avon Tyres, 2003 Mickey Thompson Performance Tire & Wheels, in the same year joined a joint venture with Kendra Rubber Industrial Company LTD, and in 2005 obtained 51% ownership of Chinese tire company Chengshen.
In 2014, Cooper celebrated its 100th anniversary and as of 2014, it was the fourth largest tire manufacturer in North America & the 11th globally. As of 2012, their annual revenue was 4.2B and sold over 49.5 million tires and had a 14% share in the US tire replacement market, had 10 brands and produced the following types of tires: passenger (50%), light truck tires (20%), commercial truck tires (20%), winter tires (5%), & specialty tires (5%).
