Company History

The founders of Michelin tires, Édouard and André Michelin, used to work at a rubber factory in France in 1889. One day, a cyclist stopped by the factory with a tire that needed to be repaired for his bicycle. Back then, tire repair was an arduous process, as the tire and rim were glued together, so not only did it take hours for the brothers to make the repair, but the tire had to be left to try overnight. Édouard tested the bicycle the next day, and the tire broke again after traveling but a few hundred meters. This event inspired the brothers to create their own pneumatic tire that did not require glue, so that same year, the two incorporated their new business: SCA Compagnie Générale des Établissements Michelin. Two years later, the Michelin brothers had created the removable pneumatic tire, which could be taken from the rim without the hassle of older pneumatic tires. In that same year, Charles Terront won the 1891 Paris-Brest-Paris using the Michelin brothers’ removable pneumatic tire.

Michelin continued to grow as a company. In 1934, the company invented a tire that resists deflation if it is punctured called the run-flat tire, and in 1946, Michelin created one of the greatest advents in tire technology: the radial tire. This invention would help launch Michelin into becoming one of the leading tire manufacturers, and it remains so to this day.
