As cars aim to be more green, a prime example is the crankcase ventilation system, which was designed to reduce emissions released into the atmosphere, by rerouting them back into the engine, where they're burned in the combustion chambers.
Although the PCV system is seldom listed as a maintenance item, it can cause performance and emissions problems. More so, the valve that regulates the flow of these gases (some newer vehicles don't have a valve). When the valve does not open and close on schedule, or if the system is clogged, the result is a rough idle, sluggish acceleration, or increased oil consumption. Auto Repair Wichita>>
One way to check whether a PCV valve is functioning is to remove it and shake it. If you can hear a metallic rattling noise, it's likely in good working order.
Even when the vehicle does not have a PCV valve, the hose in the PCV system may become clogged from built-up sludge. Additionally, a vacuum hose may have a leak.
A clogged PCV system or inoperative valve can increase oil consumption. This is due to increased pressure. This increased pressure can force oil past seals and gaskets. If the valve is stuck in the open position, or there is a leak in the system, too much air enters the engine and throws off the air-fuel mixture. This can cause your check engine light to pop on. Though it's not listed in the maintenance schedule in most vehicles, the PCV system should be inspected periodically to make sure it's still in good condition.
