There are several things that can lead to a rattily muffler
These are typical culprits when your car’s muffler is rattling on acceleration, while driving over bumps, and sometimes even while idling. Not only is a loose muffler an annoying noise, the rattling can place stress on additional car parts that are not built for movement. Worst-case scenario is also when the muffler is hanging too low and is ripped off or badly damaged by the road.
Although modern exhaust systems are sturdier than previous exhaust systems, they do not last forever. The aluminized steel or stainless steel last much longer, but that ensure it or the parts articulating with it will last the lifetime of the vehicle. Reasons an exhaust system may breakdown/rust prematurely include:
A muffler rattle might be fixed simply by tightening a couple of bolts or replacing a broken hanger, but occasionally the corrosion is too bad and the exhaust system and articulating parts may require replacement.
A rattle or banging noise can be heard from inside my exhaust system. Baffles or other components inside of mufflers can come loose and cause internal rattles. Even occasionally debris left from the repair can be stuck inside the exhaust system and causing rattling.
In addition, the muffler may not be the only cause of a rear end rattle. Brackets and bolts securing tailpipes, heat shields above catalytic converters and other components can come loose, and catalytic converters can develop internal rattles when they go bad.
