Ever seen that temperature gauge on your dash go above the middle line? It is concerning, right? Typically, when the temperature gauge hits dangerous temperatures, a warning light pops on. This can be an indication of a leak. Wichita Mechanic>>
Look under your car, does it look like you have an obvious leak? Pop your hood and look at your coolant (50/50 antifreeze/water mixture) reservoir. Does it appear to be low or empty? Whatever you do, do not pop the cap off the radiator, unless of course, you have a thing for scalding hot liquid. One the engine has cooled down, pop the cap off the radiator and check the level of fluid in the radiator.
Once you have identified a coolant leak, finding the leak is not terribly difficult. Liquid is usually dropping directly out of the damage hose or radiator. Typical causes of radiator leaks are corrosion inside the radiator or holes from road debris.
Look for that green stuff – but antifreeze is not always green, it can also be yellow or pinkish. So if you are not getting a visual on the liquid, then next look for rust, tracks, or stains.
The radiator and radiator hoses are not the only placed where a leak can occur, for instance leaks occur from the radiator cap, the water pump, the engine block, thermostat, overflow tank, heat exchanger, an engine gasket etc.
If you cannot find a leak, have it checked by a professional. Coolant has a way of escaping only under pressure when the car is running — possibly in the form of steam, which may not leave a trace. Radiator Repair Wichita>>
