Signs that your vehicle is experiencing a leaking radiator.

1. Visible Leaking Fluid

The radiator is a heat exchanger, and it requires coolant as the lifeblood of the system to perform this operation. Because this system requires fluid, the quickest way to know there is an issue is by identifying leak spots in the garage or on the driveway. Typical coolant colors include bright green, orange or pink. Coolant is more aromatic than other fluids and can exhibit a sweet smell. If you don’t see visible puddles and still suspect a leak, wash the engine bay and again look for leaks, as the source may be a water pump, hose or thermostat housing. If the engine is still warm, a leaking radiator may produce steam from the area of the leak. Coolant fluid is extremely toxic to people and pets and should be cleaned up safely and thoroughly.

2. Dropping Coolant Level, Rising Temperature Gauge

Next, check the coolant reservoir. A sudden drop in coolant level usually indicates a leak or issue. Radiator coolant level normally rises and falls with engine temperature, small changes or drops in the reservoir level are not unusual, and, a drastic drop is typically a sign of leakage. Fill the coolant reservoir to the indicator level and check the level after several days of normal driving. If you notice your temperature gauge rising or experience frequent engine overheating, it’s probably time to take action in order to avoid major damage.

3. Look For Stains & Rust On Parts and Hoses

Rust and discoloration on your radiator and the surrounding engine components is also a sign that your radiator may be leaking. Radiator hoses and clamps will require maintenance through the life of the vehicle as they are subject to wear and damage. Washed and inspect those parts to find possible cracks and leaks.

4. Fixing a Radiator Leak

Short-term fix: Consider a leak repair product. Remember, this is only a temporary fix. Long-term fix: Always replace the leaking part or get your vehicle to a repair shop as soon as possible.

5. Lack of Preventative Maintenance

Regular radiator coolant exchanges are necessary to prevent coolant from losing its anti-corrosive properties, as the chemistry of the product is effected over time. This coolant, although it can still keep an engine cool, becomes more acidic which can eat away at your radiator from the inside.
